Every time a company is going to exhibit at a conference/trade show, marketers rush to create marketing materials and buy giveaways to hand out to potential customers. For many years and still now, marketers believe that the only way to pursue prospects to stop by their booth is by showcasing the product or service and by giving away those groovy giveaways. Although, this tactic does work, there are new ways on how to get people at the booth without having an eager sales person tackle them down as they walk down the aisle.

So, what’s another option to pursue prospects to stop the booth and provide you with their information?

Texting!

Texting is another method on how companies and prospects can interact with each other without personal interaction. With this technology, it opens the door for marketers to a new method on how to market themselves at a conference/trade show.

At the Direct Marketing Association’s 2009 DM Days event, Acxiom had a campaign that promoted a contest which gave away an iPod Touch at the show. However, people didn’t have to stop by their booth in order to enter the contest; all they had to do is text. It was that simple! What a great way to encourage people to stop by their booth (to find out who the winner is) and to collect their data (mobile number) without even making much effort.

What did Acxiom do after they had their prospect’s mobile number?

1st – Text back right away.

The first text contained all the important information the receiver needed to know, including the disclaimer. Here’s what their text said “Ur entered n ACXM’s daily iPod Touch contest. Visit booth 429. 4msg during event. Reply w/email 4 brochure. DSTOP 2 quit, DHELP 4 info StdMsgChrgsAply

2nd – Text at the end of each day of the conference

To pursue people to stop by their booth, they told their audience that in order to find out who the winner is they had to go to their booth. And for those people who couldn’t stop by, they were given an option to reply to the text message with their email address in order to get a brochure. Bravo! Here’s what their text said “Today’s iPod Touch winner just posted at booth 429. Interested in mobile mktg programs, reply with email address to receive brochure, 888-XXX-XXXX

3rd – Responding to those who replied with their email

For those people who replied to the Acxiom’s text with their email address, they received an email the following day with a PDF of their brochure.

Axciom’s campaign – ROCKS

Axciom’s ad

Marketers – It’s time that we all think smart and use the new technology to our advantage. Text messaging is still new, but it’s certainly a new way to interact with your customers and prospects without having them go to your website, store, booth, etc. There are many ways on how you can use text messaging as a marketing tool, but this all depends on the type of product or service that you provide. Remember, be creative with your text campaigns in order to encourage your customers and prospects to act.
