You’ve done your job to make your marketing department successful by hiring the best marketers you could find, keeping the lines of communication open between your team, providing the necessary tools, offering praise, incentives and guidance to your staff. Unfortunately, even when you’re the best boss and provide your team with the tools they need, the department sometimes ends up with a marketer who keeps messing up – missing deadline, forgetting projects, not proof reading correctly, etc.

Why does this happen?

The answer varies, it all depends on that individual (everyone is different). This is why it’s important that you confront the issues before it gets worse and affects your marketing. Obviously, one way to handle a screw-up is to just say “buh-bye” and terminate employment, especially if your company is an at-will employer. However, termination should be your last alternative, especially since it’s cost-effective.

First, talk to the marketer and address the issues (screw ups) – one by one. After the issues are addressed, provide the marketer with an active plan on how he/she will tackle the issues. During the meeting, make sure your tone is professional and not degrading in any manner. Remember, the purpose of this meeting to help your marketer stop screwing up and at the same time continue motivating him/her.

7 ways on how you can handle this situation – depending on your marketer’s issues

1. Change of Duties/Projects - It may turn out that the marketer only has issues on certain projects/duties that he/she does not find interesting or stimulating. If that’s the case, you can remove those duties/projects and have him/her focus on the areas in which he/she excels – benefiting the company’s marketing objectives.

2. Training – If the marketer is messing up because of the lack of training, then it’s important that he/she gets the training needed. This is the key to turning your lefty-loosey into a righty-tighty.

3. Schedule Change – Some people hate mornings and others afternoons, so if time is the factor for the mess up, then it’s time to evaluate their work schedule. Offer a more flexible schedule.

4. Managing Skills - If your marketer has the responsibility of managing a staff and is unable to do so effectively. You have to two options – 1 -train him/her yourself or send that person to a management course 2- take the managing responsibilities away.

5. Communication Skills – Bad communication within the department can affect everyone and every project. It is important to train the marketer the way he/she needs to communicate with every department in regards to projects. In marketing, it’s important to be very detailed oriented.

6. Being Professional – Marketers need to be professional within the department and outside the department. If the marketer is screwing up by not being professional, then it’s important to re-introduce the employee handbook which explains how he/she needs to conduct at the office.

7. Time Management – If the marketer has trouble managing his/her time, then it’s important that you introduce some time management strategies. Every person is different, so you have to tailor the strategies to that specific individual.

No matter how you deal with the situation, at the end, it’s all up to the marketer to make this work.
